Sri Lanka Police has provided compensation to the family of the traffic police officer who died after being run over by an SUV in Colombo recently.Accordingly, the deceased police constables parents have received Rs.
125,000 from the Junior Police Officers Association and Rs.
103,808 from the Police Central Welfare Association Welfare Scheme.In addition, the Inspector-General of Police has taken the necessary measures to provide his family with monthly salary payments and allowances up to the age of 55 years, inclusive of all salary increments and salary conversions of the government considering that the officer in question was still alive and in service.The 25-year-old Police Constable, identified as a resident of the Walasmulla area, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition, after an errant driver ran him over on October 05.Meanwhile, the SUV driver was arrested soon after the accident, police said, adding that he had failed to control the speed of the vehicle and run over the police officer.
The vehicle had subsequently come to a stop after crashing into the fountain located at the center of the Independence Square Roundabout.
The 27-year-old was remanded until October 10 after being produced before the court yesterday.Soon after the accident, a special team from the Narahenpita Police was tasked with investigating the accident, under the directives of the OIC of the Cinnamon Gardens Police.Police Constable Manoj Priyankara has been posthumously elevated to the rank of Sergeant.
