PUNE: From homeopaths and ayurveda degree-holders to postgraduates and graduates in law, management, computer application and science are among the 3,238 highly qualified aspirants for the Pune police's constable/drivers' posts, hinting at desperation of job seekers, particularly from rural Maharashtra, for stability.The minimum qualification to apply for the posts of constables and drivers is Standard XII pass.

A total of 73,242 candidates have applied for 720 posts of constables and 72 drivers.

The drivers' recruitment process started on January 3 and for the constables would begin from January 18.Supervising the recruitment process, additional commissioner of police (crime), Ramnath Pokale, told TOI, "Aspirants for constables/drivers' posts holding bachelor/master's degrees have excellent knowledge in their respective fields.

They are not only bright and intelligent; but are good in physical and written tests.

Their physical strength is meeting requirements of the police force.

They have the scope to appear in competitive exams like MPSC/UPSC."Retired director-general of police Pravin Dixit said, "Highly educated aspirants are eyeing to join the force because of their attraction to wear the 'khaki' uniform.

Joining the police force is an elite service comparing other jobs.

A policeman gets a free hand to discharge duty and for s/he uniform is prestige.

They can permanently serve in Pune.

The government has increased the age limit for the post of constables.

The recruitment criteria for constables should be above 12th standard but below graduation."Ajaz Bagwan, the in charge of the competitive cell at Azam Campus, said, "Many still have craze to get government jobs because it provides them security and facilities like accommodation and medical cover.

There is no fear of losing a job like in private service."Aspirant Sufiyan Shaikh (22) from Yavatmal, currently residing in Dattawadi, said, "I am a second-year MA student.

I am good in physique and general knowledge.

To improve my financial condition, I am participating in the police recruitment rally.

This job will help me to continue with education and prepare for competitive exams."Another aspirant, Ganesh Bendre (26) from Bableshwar taluka in Ahmednagar, said, "I come from a farming background and hold a degree in arts.

I am trying my luck to become a constable because of dearth of job opportunities after the pandemic."
