The European Union (EU) and Argentina have entered into a cooperative agreement focusing on multiple aspects of energy, including renewable energies, hydrogen use, methane emissions reduction, and facilitating an equitable ecological shift. This understanding was formalized by EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and Argentina’s President, Alberto Fernández, during the EU-CELAC summit. The agreement is intended to guide future cooperation between the two regions in ensuring a just, clean transition to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.A key commitment involves the use of hydrogen and its derivatives in various sectors, including industrial processes, transport, and energy storage. Both parties also aim to minimize methane leakage in the fossil gas supply chain as much as possible by leveraging advancements in technology, reducing venting and flaring of gases, and researching innovative solutions. The agreement stresses the significance of complying with environmental laws for future investments. Moreover, it emphasizes the necessity to account for biodiversity degradation and protect water systems and aquatic ecosystems.Lastly, the document highlights the need to respect local communities’ interests during the energy transition process. This agreement builds upon ongoing dialogues and previous initiatives, underscoring the established relationship between the EU and Argentina in the energy sector.
